Bakersfield’s Traffic Operations Center (TOC) opened in June 2014. Equipped with scores of flat screen televisions providing a mix of live feed, traffic map, and timing information, the TOC aims to both improve air quality and increase safety by adjusting traffic signals to match flow.
The TOC will control 342 of Bakersfield’s 404 traffic signals. How this impacts safety or air quality has yet to be seen, but the hope is that minimizing starts and stops will ease flow and greatly improve driving conditions.
