The National Safety Council predicts that this upcoming Labor Day weekend will be the deadliest since 2008. Relying on data that shows an increasing trend in fatal motor vehicle accidents – up 9% from this same time last year – the NSC estimates 438 people will die in car, truck, and motorcycle accidents between September 2nd and 5th. This is the highest number since 2008 – a year the NSC predicted 439 deaths, just shy of actual number of 473.
What is the biggest factor behind the increase in serious and fatal car accidents? Distraction. According to the CDC, an average of eight people die and an additional 1,161 are injured every day in accidents caused by distraction – and texting is only a small part of the problem. Any use of electronics while driving – including the much lauded “hands-free” options – places everyone on the road at increased risk for injury or death. Every phone call. Every “LOL.” Every glance down to change a song or radio station. Every single time eyes and attention are removed from the road for a device, everyone is at risk.
