Record Numbers of Vehicles Recalled in 2014

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) recently released figures regarding auto recall totals for 2014. As expected, there were a record number of recalled vehicles recalled last year. In total, there were 63.9 million vehicles recalled, shattering the previous record by more than 100%.

This figure was significantly boosted by two very large recalls. General Motors (GM) recalled almost 27 million vehicles, the majority due to ignition switch defects that resulted in more than 50 car accident fatalities. There were also nearly 21 million vehicles recalled due to defective Takata airbags.

The NHTSA released a statement assuring the public that this dramatic increase in recalls is a sign that defects are being investigated more carefully, and auto makers are starting to react more quickly. Ultimately this should hopefully improve safety for all drivers on the road.
